On the flat, the best races then to specialise in are all age handicaps. In National Hunt, it is best to stick to top class non handicap races as well as handicap hurdles and chases.
The 5 Essential Criteria for creating your shortlist
Below are my 5 essential criteria that every horse must have when you are placing a bet.
1. Going - The horse must be proven on the prevailing ground conditions. This means won on same going or placed within 2 lengths on the flat or 4 lengths for National Hunt.
2. Distance - The horse must be proven on the trip. This means won on same distance or at least placed within 2 lengths on the flat or 4 lengths for National Hunt.
3. Course Type - The horse must be proven on similar
type of course. This means won on a similar track type or at least placed within 2 lengths on the flat, or 4 lengths for National Hunt.
4. Fitness - The horse must have shown that it can operate at optimal levels since its last
number of days off the track.
5. Class
- The horse must have either won at the class he is currently competing
in before or else gave a very good showing in a previous race at the
similar or higher class level.
